An evening of live performance and readings instigated by curator Mohamed Almusibli, who’ll be joined by multi-disciplinary artists Deborah Joyce Holman, Marilyn Umurungi and Jan Vorisek.

With the works tackling notions of placement/displacement by focusing on the journey/travel as a point of initiation, Almusibli will share a new presentation of the text piece Towards a Philosophy of Jet Lag in collaboration with Umurungi. This is paralleled by Vorisek’s improvised drone and feedback music utilising low frequencies, subwoofers and microphones which separate and amplify each other. Vorisek will then share his own sound-based solo performance considering the ingrained violence of the subject matter. In a presentation of newly developed works, comprising themes of dis/orientation, Deborah Joyce Holman and Marilyn Umurungi will each perform a live reading in the space.

A Series of Readings and Performances Towards a Philosophy of Jet Lag has been made possible with support from The Embassy of Switzerland in the UK.

Auto Italia’s commissions are made possible by our Exhibition Circle and Member supporters.

Mohamed Almusibli (b. Yemen, 1990) is a Swiss artist, writer and curator. His work is distinctly interdisciplinary, using his own or found texts for installation, sound, video and performance. He is an active curator alongside his artistic practice. His own writing is often the result of personal poetic anecdotes that find their way into a common space through questioning and depicting shared human emotions, beliefs and values. Recent exhibitions and performances include Les Urbaines Festival, Lausanne (2018); Arcadia Missa, London (2018) Mikro, Zurich (2017). He currently curates exhibitions at the Dynamo Project Room in Zurich, and at Truth and Consequences Gallery in Geneva.

Deborah-Joyce Holman (b. 1991, Switzerland) is an artist and curator based between London and Basel. In their work they explores uses of language through various materials, with fluidity being an important element of their artistic and curatorial practice. They have presented their work at Live In Your Head, Geneva (2018); Alienze, Lausanne (2018); and OSLO10, Basel (2017). They are the founder and co-director of 1.1, a platform for emerging practices in arts and music with an exhibition space in Basel. They have curated ‘…and their tooth, finest gold’, Les Urbaines’s visual arts exhibition in Lausanne (2018) and have initiated an as yet unnamed reading group for people of colour with Moya DeYoung.

Marilyn Umurungi (b. Rwanda, 1985) lives today as a decolonial poetess, researcher and activist based in Zurich. Her work talks about interconnectivity of racism and capitalism, demystifying patriarchy, womynhood and sexuality, and the magic of words.

Jan Vorisek (b. Switzerland, 1987) is an artist living and working in Zurich. He works across sculpture, installation, performance, improvised music and noise. With assemblages consisting of used and found materials, as well as sound-producing devices, he reflects on the fluctuation of noise as a vessel for information. Recent solo presentations include Observation Society, Guangzhou (2018); TG Gallery, Nottingham (2017); Hard Hat, Geneva (2017); Swiss Institute, New York (2016); and Galerie Bernhard, Zurich (2015). He co-organises a series of club nights called H.O.M.E (HOUSE OF MIXED EMOTIONS).
